John Mellencamp and Walk the Moon to be honoured by ASCAP

635948674051029874-Mellencampphoto-MarcHauser-TroubleMan-97-ret

John Mellencamp is about to receive another honour — one he’ll share with Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello, Smokey Robinson and Burt Bacharach and Hal David, to name a few pop luminaries.

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers will present Mellencamp with its Founders Award on April 27, at the 33rd annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards in Los Angeles. Past honourees also include Joni MItchell, James Taylor, Tom Petty, Billy Joel, Smokey Robinson, Carly Simon and Tom Waits.

In a statement, ASCAP president Paul Williams said that Mellencamp “has captured the American experience in his songs,” adding, “His infectious melodies and compassionate lyrics, wrapped in workingman’s rock, crystallize life’s joys and struggles and illuminate the human condition.”

ASCAP will also recognize Walk the Moon with its Vanguard Award, previously given to Diplo, Arcade Fire, Beck, the Killers, the Strokes and St. Vincent.

Next we’re returning to Moorabbin & Lucky 13 Garage…

Lucky13 April

Your Lucky 13 Garage hosts are Irene and Rob Bradamante…

Rob’s dream was to run a bar with live music. The venue was initially a working mechanic’s Garage – one of Rob’s other skills. It has been transformed over a few years from Rob and Irene’s hard work, into Lucky 13 Garage – Melbourne’s Premier live music venue. Complete with car and rock memorabilia, collected over many years, it’s worth a trip just to see their ‘Museum’. Go back down memory lane with old signs, old bikes and so much more….

It’ll be a sensational night – in a magic venue, with an amazing band, playing the Mellencamp hits you know & love.  Book your tickets now!!

Should the new John Mellencamp Way have pink houses?

INDY STAR Part of the Today Network – Behind Closed Doors

Sixteen miles of I-65 in Southern Indiana could soon get a new name: John Mellencamp Way.  State lawmakers gave initial approval Wednesday to a resolution urging state highway officials to rename a portion of I-65 between Austin and Seymour after the legendary rocker.
It contains no requirement along the way for an interstate running through a front yard, as Mellencamp so famously sang about in the song “Pink Houses.”

Rep. Terry Goodin, D-Austin, said he sponsored the proposal to honor Mellencamp, who grew up in Seymour and found inspiration there for many of his songs, including “Jack and Diane” and “Small Town.”

“John Mellencamp’s music resonates with so many people, regardless of culture or background,” Goodin said. “His loyalty to the state of Indiana is undeniable. Not only is his band predominantly made up of Hoosier musicians, but his music reflects the heart and soul of this state.”

In addition to his music, Mellencamp helped organize the first Farm Aid concert to raise money and awareness to help family farmers stay on their land. He also has supported Indiana University and lives in Bloomington.

“His body of work and his actions on behalf of mankind has brought positive attention to Indiana,” Goodin said. “I believe that naming a portion of the highway in his honor is a fitting tribute for his many successes.”

The newly named portion of interstate would stretch from Exit 34 to Exit 50.

The House Roads and Transportation Committee approved the resolution 13-0. It now moves to the full House.

If approved, Mellencamp should take the inaugural spin on his namesake highway in a “Rumble Seat.”
